EU Battery Passport: What European Battery Buyers Need to Know

As the European Union continues to strengthen battery sustainability and traceability requirements, the EU Battery Passport is becoming an important topic for battery manufacturers, OEMs, importers, and distributors.

Under the EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, from 18 February 2027, each LMT battery, each industrial battery with a capacity greater than 2 kWh, and each electric vehicle battery placed on the EU market or put into service must have a digital battery passport.

For European customers sourcing lithium battery systems from overseas manufacturers, Battery Passport preparation is therefore becoming an important part of battery compliance and supply-chain management.

What Is an EU Battery Passport?

The Battery Passport is a digital record containing information about a battery model and, where applicable, information specific to an individual battery.

It is designed to improve transparency and traceability throughout the battery lifecycle — from manufacturing and use to repair, reuse and recycling.

The passport will be linked to the battery through a QR code, allowing authorized users to access the relevant information digitally.

Depending on the battery category and applicable requirements, the information may include:

  • Battery identification and technical specifications
  • Manufacturer and economic operator information
  • Performance and durability data
  • Carbon footprint and sustainability information
  • Material and supply-chain information
  • Repair, reuse and recycling information
  • Battery status and lifecycle-related data

The European Commission's latest guidance published in August 2026 brings together 71 relevant data points and identifies their applicability to different battery categories.

What Batteries Need a Battery Passport?

From 18 February 2027, the Battery Passport requirement will apply to:

1. Electric Vehicle Batteries

Batteries used in electric vehicles and other applicable electric mobility applications.

2. Industrial Batteries Above 2 kWh

This category is particularly relevant to manufacturers of industrial equipment, commercial vehicles, marine systems, construction machinery, agricultural machinery and energy storage applications.

3. LMT Batteries

This includes batteries for light means of transport such as e-bikes, e-scooters and similar applications.

Why Is the Battery Passport Important for European OEMs?

Battery Passport compliance is not simply about generating a QR code.

Behind the digital passport is a structured set of battery data that needs to be collected, maintained and made available throughout the battery lifecycle.

For OEMs and system integrators, this means that battery suppliers need to provide reliable and traceable technical and sustainability data.

A capable battery manufacturer can therefore play an important role in helping customers prepare for EU market requirements.

Key Benefits

Better Traceability

Battery information can be linked to the specific battery model and, where required, the individual battery.

Greater Supply-Chain Transparency

Relevant information about battery manufacturing, materials, performance and sustainability can be organized for different stakeholders.

Support for Circularity

The Battery Passport is designed to support repair, reuse, remanufacturing and recycling throughout the battery lifecycle.

Easier EU Market Preparation

For European OEMs importing battery systems, working with a supplier that can provide the required battery data can simplify compliance preparation.

How Can CTS Battery Support Battery Passport Preparation?

At CTS Battery, we understand that European customers need more than a battery pack. They need a traceable, documented and application-specific battery solution.

As a lithium battery system manufacturer, CTS can cooperate with customers in preparing the technical and product information required for Battery Passport implementation.

Our support can include:

1. Battery Technical Data

We can provide key technical information related to the battery system, including:

  • Battery chemistry
  • Nominal voltage and capacity
  • Energy capacity
  • Battery dimensions and weight
  • BMS information
  • Electrical performance
  • Operating conditions
  • Safety-related specifications

2. Manufacturing & Product Information

CTS can support the collection and organization of relevant manufacturing and product information for the battery system.

This helps customers establish a more complete data chain from battery production to the final application.

3. Battery Performance & Lifecycle Data

For applicable projects, CTS can provide relevant battery performance and lifecycle information to support customers' Battery Passport data preparation.

4. Sustainability & Carbon-Related Information

Where applicable, CTS can cooperate with customers on sustainability-related data and documentation required for their EU compliance process.

5. QR Code & Digital Passport Cooperation

The Battery Passport is linked to the battery through a QR code. CTS can cooperate with customers and their selected Battery Passport platform or service provider to ensure the required battery information is properly prepared and connected to the digital passport system.

CTS does not simply supply batteries — we work with customers to prepare the data and documentation needed for their specific European market applications.

Battery Passport Requires Cooperation Across the Supply Chain

One important point for European customers is that Battery Passport compliance is a supply-chain responsibility.

The European Commission states that the obligation to create and maintain the Battery Passport lies with the economic operator placing the finished battery on the EU market, rather than suppliers of individual components or modules.

Therefore, battery manufacturers, OEMs, importers and other stakeholders need to cooperate closely.

For example:

Battery Manufacturer → OEM / System Integrator → Importer / Economic Operator → EU Market

Each party may have different responsibilities and access rights.

For this reason, selecting a battery supplier that can provide structured, accurate and traceable battery data can make the compliance process significantly easier.

Prepare for the EU Battery Passport

Battery Passport is not simply a QR code. It involves structured battery data, traceability and cooperation across the supply chain.

If you are an EU OEM, distributor or system integrator sourcing customized lithium battery systems, now is a good time to start preparing for the 2027 requirements.

CTS Battery is ready to cooperate with you on your customized battery system and Battery Passport requirements.
