EU Battery Passport: What European Customers Need to Know

Sep 09, 2026

As the EU strengthens battery sustainability and traceability requirements, the EU Battery Passport is becoming an important requirement for battery manufacturers and European OEMs.

According to the EU Batteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, from 18 February 2027, LMT batteries, industrial batteries above 2 kWh, and electric vehicle batteries placed on the EU market will require a digital Battery Passport.

What Is a Battery Passport?

A Battery Passport is a digital record containing key information about a battery, such as:

*Battery identification and technical specifications
* Manufacturer and production information
* Performance and durability data
* Carbon footprint and sustainability information
* Material and supply-chain information
* Repair, reuse and recycling information

The Battery Passport will be digitally linked to the battery, typically through a QR code, providing relevant stakeholders with access to required battery information.

What Does This Mean for European OEMs?

Battery Passport compliance requires cooperation across the battery supply chain.

For European OEMs and system integrators sourcing battery systems from overseas, having a battery supplier that can provide accurate, structured and traceable battery data will become increasingly important.
